Today’s review is of the Seagate BlackArmor NAS, specifically the Business Storage 4Bay NAS 4TB model#stbp4000100.

We recently installed this unit for our offices to expand our storage needs instead of changing and upgrading our existing server configuration.

Our primary concern was redundancy so we opted for the 4-bay drive with full Raid 10 configuration and utilizing 4 x 1TB Western Digital hard drives. The NAS does offer Raid 0,1,5,10 and Jbod for other configurations. It comes with 2 GB Ethernet ports, 2 Usb 3.0 ports, 1 USM port and the bays are hot swappable meaning we can change one on the fly without powering down the unit. The unit has a very small footprint which comes in at about 10″x6″x8″ and fully loaded weighs in at around 13lbs.

The first thing we noticed was that the installation was very simple. The unit is very sleek and easily pops open…

Usually the storage is separate to the VM host, however this doesn’t have to be the case. If you wanted to keep a lab environment as compact as possible you can always store the virtual machines on the same server as the storage, for large scale deployments there are some options like the Virtual SAN from VMWare if you want to distribute the storage between all the nodes.

I want to have a separate storage server for two reasons, first I can lump all the storage in one device, not just for VMs, but media and file storage too, and secondly it makes adding more VM nodes down the line very easy if I want HA or…

A Brief Update

Spectrum Bloggers Network

Greetings to you all!

Just a quick update on Spectrum Bloggers Network. One of our bloggers brought it to my attention that there is a cross over with some of the different SpLDs and so it was going to be difficult to place their blog into the network. I know myself that I have dyslexia and Irlen Syndrome and it has been suggested I may have dyspraxia too. So what I am doing now is placing blogs that cover more than one SpLD into all the categories that they cover. It has meant the addition of Irlen Syndrome too as I know that not all people with Irlen Syndrome have another SpLD tied with it.
